Self Storage Tips
Make an inventory of all items being stored by numbering the boxes, listing the contents of each box on ends and sides, and making a list of all boxes and contents. Make a copy for your insurance company and put a copy in another secure place for your records.
Fill your space for efficient, maximum usage. Think about the width and height and stack all that you can, as high as you can, allowing for a little space for accessibility. Erect additional shelving if needed for storing smaller boxed goods.
Do not lay mirrors, paintings or frames flat, wrap in bubble-wrap or flat-pack cartons and store them standing on their edges in an upright position.
Wrap silver in a non-acid tissue paper or plastic bag to minimize any tarnish.
Chrome can be wiped with a little oil to help keep rust from forming.
Use the original cartons to store electronic equipment like stereos, televisions, video and computer equipment. Or, wrap items individually in bubble-wrap and pack in strong cartons. Computer hard disks should be backed-up before storing, and back-up files should be stored in another secure place. Secure turn tables and tone arms of record players, as recommended in user manuals.
Even though the management takes precautions against mice, these can come in with other tenants goods. It is therefore recommended that you place rodent control baits inside your storage unit.
